July 5 - Day 1 of Camp Yurga!

I could tell that I was uptight about the bed while I was sleeping because I don't think I moved all night! My hip is so sore today from sleeping in the same position all night long. I have never really thought of myself as being bothered much about where I am staying, but I am a little disappointed to find out that I am a bigger princess than I thought! Oh well...small steps! I'll definitely be a little more open after this trip!!
This morning we headed back to the other flat to have breakfast (cereal) with the team. We loaded the cars and headed off to the orphanage. The playground is so cute with some animals made out of painted and cut tires. We went into a small gymnasium and started setting up by hanging streamers of flags all across the ceiling and putting up balloons. Then we turned ourselves into pirates with striped shirts, bandanas, swords or guns and face paint, and practiced our drama.

The kids started coming in and they were so adorable! There were a variety of ages from 4 or 5 to about 16 I think. The kids sat on a bench to watch our play at the beginning. We started off with our captain (played by Andrey, who was dressed up like Jack Sparrow from the Pirares of the Caribbean) calling for his Bostsman (played by Olga). He then had her call all of us pirates on deck and had us introduce ourselves. I was Piratka Baracouda...ARGGGG!!! Next the captain told us it was time to start traveling again, and we all complain that we don't want to and it's boring. Then one of the other pirates suggested that we bring the kids with us. The captain says they can't come with us because they are not pirates - they don't have bandanas or flags. So then we broke the kids up into teams and gave them coloured bandanas and had them create a team flag on black fabric with paint. Our team was team Dragon (I can't remember how to say it in Russian). After that Dima (playing Pirate Catastrophe) came running in with Lena (playing a mermaid) over his shoulder all tangled up in nets. They untied her and convinced her to tell the kids a story. She told the story sod Noah's Ark and how there is punishment for sin.

Then us pirates decided to tie up our caption so that we could take the kids and sail wherever we wanted. We wended up landing in Denmark (where Kristina is from). Then Kristina presented a slideshow of pictures on what it is like in Denmark. Next we sang some songs with the kids in a circle while we did actions to them as well.
I'm having trouble remembering exactly everything we did, as it is all in Russian so sometimes I don't know what's going on!! But at some point we did crafts with the kids - they had 3 different ones to make. One was a mermaid crown made out of different colours of plastic bag, one was stained glass windows (on plastic sheets), and the edible craft was a marshmallow clam shell that they decorated and put a candy inside.

Then they learned a memory verse - Romans 6:23. And they were told they had some homework - to show what they learned today in some way (ie. a picture, a drama, etc.).
We wrapped up at 1:00 and the kids went to have lunch and we went back to the flat. We had spaghetti noodles, salad (and sausage).

Then we went back to the orphanage. All of the kids nap in the afternoon, so while they were doing that we began re-painting their playground, as everything was faded and chipped. I painted some tires that had flowers in them, as well as a couple of benches, a swing and a zebra made out of tires. I loved how they made flowers out of plastic bottles - I definitely want to do that when I get home! I'll share pictures too! I found the painting really enjoyable - it was nice to be outside, and it was kind of like some quiet down time even though we were still working.

Later on the kids came back outside and played. We brought a big trampoline and set it up so they could use it and they loved it! It did cause a few tears though...waiting for your turn is difficult when you are little!!

Then we came back to the flat and had dinner (borscht), and discussed how the day went, and got everything ready for the next day. After that the four of us went back to the dorm, showered and went to bed. (Except we have WAY too much fun with each other and end up laughing for AGES!)
Oh! And when I get home, ask me to say John 3:16 in Russian! I've been learning it! :)
